Fort Morgan Sunrise
Alabama Gulf Coast Beach Sea Turtles

We recently visited the beaches at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. The beaches were beautiful and the water excellent. I realized that it was sea turtle nesting season, so I did some investigating. “Share the Beach” has identified many Alabama sea turtle nests on the Fort Morgan Peninsula and Dauphin Island beaches with 100 to almost 150 eggs each. A couple were tagged and one¬†lucky mother¬†was outfitted with a transmitter. She was a 25 year old named “Linda”. She weighed 250 lbs and laid 117 eggs that were moved to safety closer to the dunes.

Video Loggerhead Hatch Gulf Shores 2011

In 2009,” Share the Beach” volunteers discovered sixty-four loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nests and two Kemps Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii)nests along the Alabama Gulf Coast.¬†An adult loggerhead turtle weighs an average of 300 pounds. It is estimated that 4,513 hatch-lings safely made it to the Gulf of Mexico. Kudos to the volunteers at “Share the Beach“.

Many friends along the Gulf Coast as well as those in North Alabama and Mississippi have had a tough go at it lately. We wanted to do a blog focusing on renewal, specifically in the Gulf Shores area. We all need our “batteries” recharged occasionally so¬†plan¬†your Alabama Vacation Getaway to a¬†South¬†Alabama Bed¬†and Breakfast. B&B Inns offer romantic weekend getaways. The beach awaits you.

"The Green Queens"
Gulf Coast Vacation Getaways Ideas

Here is an idea for a weekend getaway. The last single tax colony in the United States, Fairhope, AL has plenty to do and see. Begin the day with a walk on the Fairhope Pier over Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Then carouse the many eclectic shops of downtown or take in the Fire Museum near the famous Fairhope Clock.

Head over to the Windmill Market¬†¬†for lunch at Mary Ann’s Deli¬†or Moe’s BBQ.¬†The market has live music on the weekends. The majority of the building is constructed from recycled materials. Rainwater is collected for all irrigation needs. Their own windmill generates power. Kudos to their efforts.

For a taste of the area, pick up a couple loaves of fresh breads baked by Jesse’s Restaurant and Moore Brothers Market. Nicole and Jennifer are the true “Green Queens”. Westide Grocery has set up shop in the market with local and organic produce, meat, cheese, snacks and more to take to the house.

For cocktails visit “My Place” for townies and tunies¬†or “McSharry’s” irish pub both just across the street from the market. For wine and cheese, Red or White, a wine and gourmet center. Master Joe’s Sushi bar is my most favorite dinner spot. Try the “Black Pearl” roll.¬†Just south of the Marriott’s Grand Hotel, “The Wash House” restaurant in Point Clear, AL¬†is highly recommended {reservations required}.¬†Ask for David

Small Town Historic District July 4th Parade 2011

Situated along the headwaters of the Magnolia River, ¬†just recently designated as an “Outstanding Alabama Waterway” by the Alabama Environmental Management Commission,¬†the beautiful¬†and historic community of Magnolia Springs, AL¬†was developed in 1800 from a Spanish land grant. The water from the many natural springs of the river was declared the “purest known”, providing¬†cures for kidney, uric and similar troubles.¬†Following the War Between the States¬†the river community¬†became a popular destination for families and descendants of many¬†Confederate and even Union¬†soldiers. The town remains the last community with “year-round mail service by boat”.

Every¬†July 4th natives and transplants alike beam with pride and patriotism. Most all residents and some from surrounding areas gather along oak-lined canopied Oak St to celebrate our country’s independence. The festivities begin with a parade that begins each year promptly at 11am, once tauted by CNN as the nation’s smallest Independence Parade. Everyone is welcome to participate. You may see old tractors, bicycles, tricycles, wheelbarrows or even riding lawn mowers.

Residents and their guests are invited to follow the recession to the Magnolia Springs Volunteer Fire Dept to enjoy hot dogs, refreshments, and even water activities for the kids. The scenic Magnolia River offers a cool respite from the July sun, the Cold Hole being the most popular area for river enjoyment. Alabama Paddlesports can prepare you for most any water activity. Magnolia Springs B&B, just one of many great Alabama bed and breakfast inns, is the best place to take in the parade. Only 9 miles from the Alabama Beaches, we offer a great alternative to Gulf Shores Hotels and Lodging.
