Bellingrath Gardens Magic Christmas in Lights

The B&B near Fairhope and Gulf Shores will remain open for  Thanksgiving and Christmas this year 2010. We will only be closed  Jan 2-16 as we do every year for spring cleaning. Normal business will resume on Jan 17, 2011. Several reservations have already been made over the past few days. The home will be “decked” out for Christmas including a 14-ft tree shimmering with all glass ornaments. Jesse’s Restaurant {within walking distance}  will also be open on Thanksgiving Day offering a special menu for the holiday!

The holiday tradition continues as Bellingrath Gardens & Home celebrates Magic Christmas in Lights.  Stroll through over 3 million sparkling lights and over 928 displays throughout the 65 acre Garden estate.  The Bellingrath Home is decorated in its holiday finery and poinsettias encompass the Gardens.  Nightly choral performances are held on the South Terrace of the Bellingrath Home.

November 26 – December 31, 2010     Closed December 25th

Pristine Beaches and Perfect Weather

Plan a trip down here now! It just does not get any better than this! The next couple of weeks are promising with great weather, highs in the lower 80’s and lows in the mid 60’s, little to no crowds, no lines at restaurants, no traffic to deal with, just perfect all around!

After months of not going to the beach, Eric and I finally got a chance to visit Gulf Shores, Orange Beach & Fort Morgan on Monday and Tuesday of this week, October 18th and 19th. We are here to say that this is the time you need to schedule a trip down here to stay with us! The weather is perfect with the highs in the low 80’s, low humidity, plenty of sunshine, just wispy clouds to soften the sunlight, no sweating at all and warm clear aqua blue waters. It is perfect beach weather! We are most happy to report that even down Fort Morgan where we send most all our guests to the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, the sand quality is “Destin like”. The sand is beautiful, clean, soft, debris and tar free. Our beaches are in better condition than we have experienced in years! We are delighted. And one of the coolest things is we were the only ones out there!

You know those pictures you see of a couple or family enjoying the beach with no one in sight? Well that is exactly how it was. Just us and the environment was all there was. So not only perfect weather and clean beaches, but limited people to share it with!

Jon Bon Jovi & Brad Paisley Concerts

Photo from

The Jon Bon Jovi and Brad Paisley Concerts were a complete success last weekend. To be on Gulf Shores beach and  hear a concert is something many of us have never experienced and was absolutely spectacular. On Friday the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd seemed to love Gulf Shores and so did the New Jersey rocker Jon Bon Jovi. Judging from the crowds the goal of 35,000 on the sugar white sands was well within reach. In-between songs Bon Jovi reached out to the crowd and said, “Out on the beach in Alabama on a Friday night! Are you with me out there?” The deafening reaction from the sprawling crowd was a pure sign of agreement. The unity displayed in that one moment resonated with vacationers and locals alike! With occupancy rates reported in the 80 to 90 percent across the coast for the weekend it was a much needed boost to our local economy.

The logistics of the event was a key point of improvement after Jimmy Buffet’s summer concert, the first of a four part series. Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft said, “The good thing about this one is we knew what we were doing. Last time we thought we knew. There’s a big difference.” Our guests commented on how well the events were organized and executed. The last of the series will be Alan Jackson at the Wharf Saturday October 30th.

The best thing it did is help us with the “perceptions” that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has ruined our beaches. BP has been hard at work to clean our beaches. I and thousands of others saw first hand how clean everything really is. I personally have not seen the beaches in this good a shape in years. The sand is “Destin like” sand. The color and feel and has not been this great in years. Many years of hurricanes churning up the beach in addition to dredging and re-nourishing projects had left us with many pieces of shells and other tiny debris. Now it is once again soft to walk on, beautiful white and squeaky clean!
